How Can I Grow My Business?

Mar 8, 2020

My name is Steven Kohnke and I’m one of the business coaches here at Denver, Business Coach. One of the questions we get a lot here is how do I scale my business? [or how do I grow my business?]

One of the ways to look at this is through just a couple of components. Here are the 6 steps to growing your business:

Do the Job.

This is when you are first actually doing the actual job, wearing the many hats and really trying to figure out what you like and what you don’t like about the job as a whole.

Record the Job.

You’re simply beginning to compartmentalize the position itself and really understanding the roles and responsibilities, ins and outs of the job itself.

Systemize and Organize the job

Basically, here you’re making it as effective as you know how. At this stage, you should be thinking about how to train for this job in the future. Basically what that means is if this job is highly procedural, it would be beneficial for you to record yourself executing the procedures either through a video of yourself or of a screen record of you executing the procedures. Therefore, when you are ready to hire someone for this position, they can access these videos in these training videos throughout training and then use them as a reference point.

Hiring for the Job

You should see our series on How Do I Hire the Right Person? for more details on how to do this right.

Training and Onboarding for the Job

Now, your onboarding process should be one of the most important processes you have in your business. The role of the onboarding process is to get your new hire trained up as proficient as possible as quickly as possible so that they can execute the job and you can get back to doing what you do best.

Manage the Job

Now the sixth component and really the final component of doing this well, scaling up is Managing the Job. And this is where you want to be. This is where you become the leader for the person you hired who is proficient in their work and help them succeed in their job so that you can get back to focusing on what it takes to grow the business itself.

To Summarize:

  1. Do the Job.
  2. Record the Job.
  3. Systemize and Organize the Job.
  4. Hire for the Job.
  5. Train & Onboard for the Job.
  6. Manage the Job.
